About Empty Homes Ireland

Why I Started Tracking These Numbers

I'm a regular Irish person who got fed up with rising housing costs and decided to look into the numbers myself.

It started when hearing about rent going up for the third time in two years for people. Instead of just complaining, I got curious: Is this normal? How bad is it really? What do people in other countries pay?

The more I dug into housing data, the more obvious the problem became. We don't have a housing shortage - we have empty homes sitting unused while people can't find places to live.

What This Site Is About

This is not a political website. I'm not trying to convert anyone to any ideology. I'm just tracking numbers and sharing what I've found.

Every statistic on this site comes from government data, rental market reports, or international housing studies. When I compare Ireland to other places in Europ, it's because I'm genuinely curious about how they make housing work.

I write about housing the same way I'd explain it to a friend over coffee - with real examples, specific numbers, and no political jargon.

Transparency & Data Quality

This site maintains the following standards:

  • No fake links: If we can't verify a source, we don't link to it
  • Real numbers only: Statistics come from official agencies and established research organizations
  • Show our work: Methodology and assumptions are documented
  • Regular updates: Housing data changes, and we update accordingly as best as we can

How I Research

I spend time reading government reports, international housing studies, and rental market data. When I find something interesting, I try to explain it in plain English.

I'm particularly interested in places that have solved housing problems we're still struggling with in Ireland. Not because I think we should copy everything they do, but because it's worth understanding what actually works.

If you spot an error or have better data sources, please let me know.
